In addition to the many different kinds of cultural activities provided by Shreveport’s many theaters, museums, cultural events and festivals, there are also many different types of sports and recreational activities for people to enjoy in the local region. Swimming is a very popular activity during warm weather at the many lakes and parks with swimming facilities. Swim lessons are available at local YMCA branches and at many private swim clubs and swim schools. Children can also join little league baseball teams, football, soccer, basketball, bowling and lacrosse teams, enjoy ice skating at indoor rinks, and take gymnastics or martial arts classes. Bicycling, jogging and hiking are very popular outdoor activities all year round along Shreveport-Bossier City’s many bicycling and walking paths.

Golf and tennis

Golf is becoming an increasingly popular activity with people of all ages in Shreveport on the 10 excellent golf courses within the metropolitan area and on 9 other courses located within convenient driving distance. Young golfers compete in the Shreveport-Bossier Junior's Golf Tour sponsored by the East Ridge Country Club, and all devoted duffers love the challenging signature courses designed by Hal Sutton, Fred Couples, and PGA Champion David Toms. 8 tennis centers and racquet clubs are also available for tennis enthusiasts in Shreveport-Bossier City.

Fishing and hunting

Opportunities to catch river bass, bream, crappie and catfish abound on the Red River and its many branching bayous, sloughs, oxbows and streams. Caddo Lake, which is nestled among a forest of cypress trees, is another great place to catch bass and it is common to see anglers taking home big fish that weigh between 6 and 11 lbs. At the 8,575-acre Cross Lake where moss covered cypress trees also line the shores, largemouth bass, red ear sunfish, bluegill and catfish can be found. The 17,200-acre Lake Bistineau located east of Shreveport is listed as being one of the top 5 best places in Louisiana for catching crappie and it is also known for producing big catches of largemouth bass, yellow bass, bluegill, bullheads, channel and flathead catfish.

Louisiana is a very popular state for deer hunting and is famous for its large population of whitetail deer. Located near Shreveport, the 4,211-acre Loggy Bayou Wildlife Management Area is known to be lucky for hunters of whitetail deer and elk. Louisiana is also the second most popular state for duck hunting. Huge flocks of wild ducks migrate each year through the Mississippi Flyway to feed, breed and rest in Louisiana from November through February. Hunters are also able to find wild turkeys, geese and quail throughout the region.

Camping and other activities

One of the best local campgrounds is at Lake Bistineau in Lake Bistineau State Park where 67 campsites with water and electricity are available to the public along with restrooms, showers and garbage disposal facilities. Other campgrounds situated locally include the Shreveport-Bossier KOA, Hilltop Campgrounds, Clark’s Red River Marina, Kelly’s Campground, Cash Point Landing Marina, Lakewood Village RV Park, C&J RV Park, Camper’s RV Center, Maplewood RV Park and Pine Hill RV Park.

There are many other exciting opportunities to have fun in Shreveport-Bossier City. For people of all ages and especially for children and their parents, relatives and friends, Water Town USA offers 3 swimming pools, many waterslides and a special children’s water play area. For people who want a more private party experience, houseboat rentals and luxury barge charters are available on the scenic Red River. And for those who desire a more extreme exploring adventure, opportunities for sightseeing via skydiving are provided by Skydive Louisiana located at the end of Gillian Airport Road near Gillian Airport.
